Explorations:A 26 week out patient substance abuse program for adults. Substance abuse is primarily a problem of self-medication to escape the pains of everyday living. Stress, anxiety, depressed mood, anger, frustration, relationship problems, and the realities of adult responsibilities are emotional burdens that interfere with happiness. In addition, personal histories and personality can contribute to negative feelings that add to the emotional burden. In part, our culture normalizes escape from these burdens through the use of alcohol and controlled substances, factors that perpetuate and contribute to substance abuse. With this knowledge in place Explorations then provides the tools and strategies that replace substance abuse as a means of coping with life ’ s stress

Perspectives: A 26 week men ’ s domestic violence and substance abuse program. For men 18- and older. Violence against women is a problem that is both psychological and cultural/societal in nature. Using treatment strategies from both the psychological and feminist models of domestic violence (DV) counseling, Perspectives approaches DV treatment with dual modalities. First, most men who commit DV are themselves victims of abuse and thus are psychologically vulnerable, having poor self images and a sensitivity to perceived abuse. A perspective is sensitive to this psychology and thus treats these men with dignity and respect, while at the same time being unyielding in providing an atmosphere of accountability for one ’ s actions. Second, DV is a strategy to maintain power and control of the cultural/societal dominance of men over women. Termed male privilege, it is a cultural/societal structure so prevalent that it
emotionally internalized and deemed the natural order of human life. Perspectives expose and analyzed this truth, revealing its discriminatory nature and establishing a foundation for empathy. Self-identity, belief systems, emotional regulation and psychosocial education are presented in format that is non- shaming and accountability based.
